Elizabeth "Bette" O'Connell
April 1, 1935
December 23, 2016
Elizabeth (Bette) O’Connell passed away at her home December 23, 2016.
Betty was born to Delia and Raymond Orange in Portland, Maine on 4/1/1935. She grew up on Munjoy Hill and attended Portland schools graduating from Portland High School.
After graduation she embarked on a career with the Johnson Supply Company. There she became a tremendous asset to the organization and she often spoke of the great experience that was in her life.
As her career continued she met and fell in love with Bill O’Connell. They were soulmates and the best of friends from day one. They were never apart. They enjoyed family, travel and sports! Bill’s passing at a very early age was devastating to Bette and all those that knew him.
After Bill’s passing Bette’s passion became the Probate Court in Portland, Maine. In the years after Johnson Supply Bette had “taken charge” of the probate world in Cumberland County. Lawyer after lawyer marveled at the knowledge and assistance that she provided to them. Her respect for them was mutual. Her respect for the probate court and its judges was also evident. She became an expert in the field and published two books and many articles on the subject.
After retirement she spent most of her time at her home in Portland. She took great pride in having that home.
Bette should be remembered as a strong, independent, smart woman who dedicated her life to public service.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill O’Connell, her parents, Delia and Raymond Orange, her brother, Patrick Greeley and her sister and brother in law, Mary and Vincent Ciampi.
She is survived by her niece and her husband, Kathi and Jack Hardy, Brooke Hardy. Her nephew and his wife Vince and Anne-Marie Ciampi, Vincent Ciampi and Matthew Ciampi.
The family will be holding a private ceremony.
