She was born in Pasadena, California to Claude Joseph, who was in the Army, and Edith McMahon Joseph, and had two siblings, Donald and Marion. They lived in many places in the country when she was a child. She attended University of Washington. She met her first husband, June Gates, in Washington. She also was the editor for the Portland Symphony Orchestra Cookbook. They were active boaters, and sailed and boated for decades.
Their middle daughter Claudia, developed schizophrenia in her teens, and they became actively involved in the Maine Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Upon her suicide they helped raise a million dollars and were instrumental in creating the Amity House in Portland. Adele won an award for being one of the 10 most philanthropic women in the state of Maine during this time.~
In her later years, after her divorce, she lived in Ocean View where she thrived. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. She was predeceased by John E.
